Join Mighty Writers for a performance poetry workshop based upon the book "Sister Slam and the Poetic Motormouth Road Trip" by Linda Oatman High. What will your slam poet name be? How about your best friend's slam name? What are the keys to winning a poetry slam? Come out and see! Students will complete a free-verse poem and get a first chance to perform their poem in a safe and encouraging atmosphere.
This workshop is a collaboration of Mighty Writers and author Linda Oatman High.

I recently saw a horrific report on the news. "Young Cambodian Woman Murders her two children ages 8 & 12" Immediately I thought to myself, "Oh that poor woman must have been suffering from some sort of mental illness, like depression or something", now I'm no doctor, but why else would any woman want to kill her own children. I mean we all remember Andrea Yates the women from Texas who drowned all five of her children one by one, because she was suffering from post-partum depression.
Mental Illness is real people. Especially in women, because we are emotional by design.(my own words, remember I am no physician..lol) Women have so many hormones flowing in and all around them. so when a special women is saying that she is OVERWHELMED listen to her vents. It will go a long way.!:) And if you need someone to talk to, find someone fast.

Earthquake Survival 101
We recently experienced a slight earthquake shock in Philly the other day( who knew!!), and the day after a co-worker e-mailed me tips on what to do during an earthquake, so I thought I should share...
What to Do During an Earthquake
Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place and if you are indoors, stay there until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.
If indoors
DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.
Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.
DO NOT use the elevators.
If outdoors
Stay there.
Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls. Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.
If in a moving vehicle
Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.
If trapped under debris
Do not light a match.
Do not move about or kick up dust.
Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

Venture out
When faced with a choice, choose the path that strengthens you. Choose to learn, choose to grow, choose to more fully become who you are.
Explore places where you have not been before. Look at ideas and concepts that you have not considered before.
If you stay hidden in the comfortable and familiar, your spirit can soon grow weary. Venture out and recharge the passion in your life.
Venture out there beyond what is comfortable, routine and expected. Venture out and discover the depth and the richness of who you are.
A life that is tested and challenged is a life that surely becomes filled with real purpose. The more briskly the wind blows against your face, the more fully alive you'll feel.
Venture out from where you've been, then from that new perspective venture out again. There's no end to what you can discover, and become.

Hump Day Funnies!
A sweet grandmother
Telephoned St. Joseph's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it
possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?"
The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name
and room number of the patient?"
The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay,
Room302."
The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the
nurse’s station for that room."
After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said,
"I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well.
Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and
her Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow."
The grandmother said , "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried.
God bless you for the good News."
The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your
grandmother?"
The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells
me Sugar Honey Ice Tea!

Joke of the day!
Since it's Friday, and I myself have had a long week. I thought I would post a funny joke. You know what some wise old folks always say... If you laugh often, you will live longer w/o stress... So enjoy this cutie joke!
To Be 6 Again!
A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for her birthday.
'I'd like to be six again', she replied, still looking in the mirror .
On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Lucky Charms, and then took her to Six Flags theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was.
Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake.
Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure!
Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted.
He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what was it like being six again?'
Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed.
'I meant my dress size, you retard!!!!'
The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is gonna get it wrong.
